Joint Preserving Osteotomy
High Tibial Osteotomy
- For patients where the lower extremity is maligned (too much knock knee or bowleg) your surgeon may recommend an osteotomy to realign the knee. During this procedure, your surgeon will cut the bone in your leg (either the shin bone or thigh bone), place bone graft in place, realign the knee, and fix with a plate and screws.
- Often times, this procedure is done at the same time as cartilage restoration surgery, ligament reconstruction, or meniscus transplant
- You will usually be able to go home after the surgery, you will be required to wear a brace, and you may not be able to put weight on the leg depending on what surgery was performed
- Full recovery will usually take 6-12 months before the patient is fully ready to return to all normal activities
